چکیده
Introduction The incidence of salivary gland tumors is claimed to be influenced by geographical and racial factors; however there is no epidemiological study of salivary gland tumors in Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital, Thailand. Objective To study the frequency of salivary gland tumors in Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital, Thailand. Materials and methods The histological diagnoses of 198 salivary gland tumors diagnosed in the Department of Pathology, Faculty of Medicine, Chiang Mai University, Chiang Mai, Thailand, from 2000 to 2004 were re-evaluated based on the 2005 World Health Organization classification of salivary gland tumors. Results Of the total 198 cases, 180 (90.90%), and 18 (9.10%) were primary and other tumors, respectively. Among the primary tumor group, 104 cases (57.78%) were female and 76 (42.22%) male. The age ranged from 2 to 90 (mean = 49.26±16.11) years. The sites of involvement included parotid gland (n=141, 80.11%), submandibular gland (n=27, 15.34%), sublingual gland (n=2, 1.14%), and minor salivary glands (n=6, 3.41%). There were 131 (72.78%) benign and 49 (27.22%) malignant cases. The four common tumors were pleomorphic adenoma (n=84, 46.67%), Warthin tumor (n=38, 21.11%), adenoid cystic carcinoma (n=18, 10.00%), and mucoepidermoid carcinoma (n=15, 8.33%). Conclusion The findings of this study were more or less similar to those in the literature. Interesting features were the distinctively high frequencies of Warthin tumor and adenoid cystic carcinoma in this population. Chiang Mai Med Bull 2006;45(2):45-54.
